Uruguay and Argentina to Celebrate Treaty of The Río de la Plata

The leaders will sign in a joint declaration “the multiple agreements that were reached, in the year of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of the Río de la Plata and its Maritime Front.”

The Argentine Foreign Minister, Santiago Cafeiro, was received on Friday, in Montevideo, by his Uruguayan counterpart, Francisco Bustillo.

Both proposed reviewing the bilateral economic and trade agenda, promoting actions that favor trade and investment between the two countries.

They also agreed to work on an action plan to increase trade through the export and investment promotion agencies of Uruguay and Argentina, according to an official statement.

Next week the authorities of the Central Banks of both countries will meet to study the feasibility of using a common currency and a system capable of speeding up trade between the parties.

Foreign Minister Cafiero reiterated his gratitude to the government of Uruguay for its historical support to Argentina’s legitimate rights to the Malvinas, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and its surrounding maritime areas.
