Best Things to Do in Peru

When it comes to breathtaking scenery and immaculately preserved ruins, Peru is so much more than just Machu Picchu.

You can visit the Amazon, explore the Inca Trail, and savor the culture in lively Lima. Add this South American jewel to your bucket list – we guarantee you won’t regret it!

Marvel at Machu Picchu

When you gaze out over the ancient ruins of Machu Pichu sitting atop the Andes mountains, you may find yourself wondering if you are dreaming. The sight is truly out of this world.

You can either get to the 15th-century site by bus or, if you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can hike up.

The ruins are the centerpiece, but the lush green mountains and low clouds make it one of the most tranquil environments in the world.

Discover the Amazon

You can visit the largest rainforest in the world in Peru’s Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. This section of the Amazon is often regarded as the start of the remarkable Amazon River.

With many tourists flocking to Brazil to visit the rainforest, the Peruvian part of it remains quieter and relatively untouched. This gives you the freedom to explore the natural wonder and enjoy water activities such as swimming, canoeing, and our personal favorite: kayaking.

Explore Cusco

To step into the history of Peru, look no further than the ancient city of Cusco.

Between the 13th and 16th centuries, Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire. Its layout is quite remarkable, with a blend of ancient Inca ruin architecture and Spanish colonial influence.

The attractions we recommend you see include the Main Square, Qorikancha, Cusco Cathedral, Museo Inka, and more.

Hike the Inca Trail

If you enjoy hiking, you can do one of the most daring and adventurous trails in the world: the Inca Trail.

This hiking trail is strenuous and better suited to experienced hikers, as it takes about four days to complete it and it can be quite steep in parts. You will pass through breathtaking pockets of Peruvian nature, stumble across several areas of ruin, and conclude at Machu Picchu.

Experience Lima

The capital city of Lima is a must-visit in Peru to experience the center of culture, food, and history.

Lima’s central hub takes you back in time with its Spanish colonial influence seen in the layout and buildings. The food scene is massive, with restaurants and food markets galore to enjoy local cuisines like ceviche, Cuy, Lomo Saltado, and more.

Our favorite sights here include Huaca Pucllana, Lima Main Square, and the Cathedral of Lima.

Study the Nazca Lines

Explore the incredible and mysterious Nazca lines in Southern Peru for a glimpse of the lost culture of the Nazca people.

Thought to be from the period between A.D. 1 to 700, the geoglyphs are etched in the desert landscape and are still as clear and visible to this day.

There is much speculation about what the images depict and mean, but everyone has their beliefs. See it for yourself to make up your mind.

Wander Through Sacsayhuaman

Not far out from Cusco lies the ancient 15th-century citadel of Sacsayhuaman, another must-see set of ruins to visit in our opinion.

The complex includes a fortress structure and temples and was historically used for Inca ceremonies. It was also a major site during the Spanish conquest of Peru.

We recommend setting aside sufficient time to explore this site – you can wander around and visualize the ancient and more recent history that took place within those walls for hours on end.

Surf the North Coast

If you want the perfect balance of ancient history and untouched beaches, you need to make your way up to the North Coast of Peru.

There are desert landscapes and historical sites to visit and enjoy, but the coast is perfect for a few days at the beach and excellent seafood. It is a surfer’s paradise, so don’t forget to pack your board.

Other must-see sites include Huacas del Sol y de la Luna, Caral, and the city of Trujillo.

Journey Through Peru

Peru is a trove of ancient ruins, bold flavors, unspoiled beaches, and fascinating history. This should not be overlooked as a stop on your South American itinerary, as the stunning nature and architecture might make it your top pick on the continent.
